Maa Sarada's Kitchen Cafe

Open Saturdays 10am to 1pm

Maa Sarada’s Kitchen community cafe located at Vedanta Centre is open on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. The Café is run by volunteers and provides affordable and nutritious vegetarian meals.

The Cafe started its operations in June 2020, coinciding with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This cafeteria with commercial license enabled volunteers of the Centre to cook free meals on Fridays for people in need and a Cafe on Saturdays where food is sold at reasonable rates to help fund the free food program. Demand for the service expanded rapidly and operating from the small kiosk became a challenge. In July 2022 a larger purpose-built commercial kitchen was opened inside the lower ground floor hall of Vedanta Centre.

All proceeds from the Saturday Cafe go to support the charitable activities of the Vedanta Centre. A donation of $5 will sponsor a free frozen meal to someone in need via our Vedanta Soup Kitchen.

About 60 active volunteers participate in running the Café, some weekly and others intermittently. On average the Café takes 100 orders and sees at least 200 people come through the space every Saturday. People from all backgrounds come to eat and volunteer. Everyone is welcome. Volunteering at the Cafe provides the opportunity to make new friendships and gain new skills and confidence.

We would like to thank the volunteers, customers, Ipswich City Council, QLD Government, Federal Government, Sisters of Charity, Honda Foundation and Annie Danks Trust for your support.

Saturday Cafe Menu

Volunteer

We need volunteers to help with cooking, setting up, cleaning, packing up and other general cafe duties. The proceeds from the Saturday cafe helps to fund the free food programs and provides meals at reasonable prices to the community.

Hours are available for volunteers from 6am till 2pm. We prefer volunteers to be able to attend at least twice a month, as this helps with rostering and keeping up to date with the operations.

A mandatory online food safety induction is required as part of the induction training. All volunteers are provided a complimentary dine-in meal after their shift.
